The UK Startup Explorer is an interactive map featuring data about UK startups and communities.
Capital cities are always the main attractors for establishing new businesses: London confirms
itself as one of the world’s top startup ecosystems.
The platform helps entrepreneurs to find startup hubs or to relocate their businesses. Furthermore,
it supports investors who want to learn about the top cities for investment or which areas of
expertise will potentially grow over the next decade.
Data are extracted from dealroom.com, Sifted startup reports, and UK government open portals.

Each region contains the same amount of circles, whose dimension is proportional to the size of investments.
The data are based on 12 current and emerging tech sectors. Users can select up to three different sectors.
The startup ecosystem is visualized as a layer upon the size of the investment. Accelerators, coworking spaces, and universities are important key drivers of innovation.
Each region can be explored singularly. In addition to comparing tech sectors and the
startup
ecosystem, a side panel gives more insights related to investments, quality of life, talent and
employment,
local events and organizations, and interviews with local founders.
The homepage features three main topics of interest: Tech Sectors, Quality of Life, and an increasingly important metric, the company's Diversity and Inclusion.
The dot plot shows the UK's tech hotspot: climate, mobility, and health tech sectors are rising. The bigger the dot, the more the companies active in the area.
National environmental and cost of living data are plotted onto a radar chart, giving a unique shape for each region.
Multiple bar charts display figures about investments and fundings per binary groupings and ethnicity. Data are extracted from Extend Ventures reports.
Small tutorial cards are positioned in the About page to help the visitors exploring.
The project was developed during my internship at Accurat studio (Milan). I was hands-on
researching and designing the website since my very first day. I was able to follow and take
active part in the process, from research to data analysis and visualization, UX/UI design
and prototyping phase.
