Afghanistan20 is an online project developed for the Italian NGO EMERGENCY: it reflects on the 20
(and counting) years of war in Afghanistan from the perspective of its victims and those doctors and
volunteers who help them. The extensive archive collects photographs, data, and first-hand stories
on the three Emergency hospitals and many First Aid Points spread in the country.

The website is structured with four chapters containing each contribution from Italian and foreign
journalists and a long-form with the stories from the field. The detailed report is enriched by
intense photographs and interactive data visualizations (from mobile devices).
The project was meant to be published in early September, right after the withdrawal of the American
troops. We all know that this decision only led to increasing political instability, facilitating
instead a rapid takeover by the Taliban forces. Moreover, Gino Strada, the founder of EMERGENCY,
passed away during those days (August 13). The events undeniably affected the development of the
website to the point that, to safeguard the identities of the Emergency staff and patients, we had
to cover in black their photos.
EMERGENCY has been present in Afghanistan since 1999. Its work is based on neutrality: humanitarian intervention is not aimed at favouring any side in an armed conflict. EMERGENCY's continues to stand by the people of Afghanistan, even with the worsening of the situation.
The project was developed during my internship at Accurat studio (Milan). The design of the
project started in June and lasted three intense months. The data were shared by Emergency,
already organized per topics and relevance: Accurat took care of the data visualization,
creative direction, information architecture, and design of the website, considering its primary
use from mobile devices. My intervention was mainly related to the data visualizations, from early
sketches to final
exports (with the accurate supervision of Irene).
